Information about Harrison Wood's bass teaching.
"I'm very happy to help and teach both children and adults who want to learn (or improve) their bass playing"
Since mid 2007, I've really enjoyed teaching a few private bass pupils on a Monday evening in Lancaster but now I'm living in Manchester, I can only teach them when I'm back up there. If you're happy with this flexible arrangement I'd be happy to help. If you're don in Manchester, give me a ring too.
My pupils have ranged from a young boy of eight who was a total beginner on electric bass through to my very first ever pupil who's a retired lady school teacher. She was already a good musician (playing flute to grade 8 standard) who wanted to learn to play the double bass and is now playing grade 5 pieces really well (I'm so proud of her!). I also have a guy who's a self taught electric bassist who wanted to learn double bass too and has (believe it or not) a one hundred and thirty mile round trip for his lesson with me.
Although I want my pupils to enjoy their lessons, I also want to enjoy teaching them and if they haven't got the time to put in a bit of time to practice, it becomes very boring for both them and me. Although I charge for lessons, I'm not teaching just for the money. I really want to make a difference to my pupils musical lives so they too will have a love of bass playing.
I Teach Both Double Bass and Electric Bass
In my lessons I teach ...
- All Styles ... Double bass (classical and jazz), Electric bass (pop, jazz, rock etc).
- Reading ... Although I can help electric players with tab, I prefer to teach notation and rhythm.
- Posture ... Sitting correctly and holding the bass properly.
- Sound ... Getting a quality sound on the double bass (tuning, bow technique etc) and electric bass (finger control, controls on the bass and amp).
My Background To Teaching?
- I've studied bass (and continue to study) with some of the World's greatest players and teachers and feel I've had enough experience through my lessons and my playing to help pass on my what I've learnt.
- I play on a regular basis for concerts, gigs and shows on a professional basis.
- I gained a scholarship and study bass, full time, at the 'Royal Northern College of Music' (RNCM).
- I also studied at the Junior RNCM from 2006-2009.
- I've taught bass since mid 2007 to both adults and children (my first ever student still has lessons with me).
- My mum's had a successful private music teaching practice for over twenty years and helped me in the early days with lesson plans and ideas.
- I passed my 'Grade 8' in 2007.
- I'm very patient and above all I'm passionate about bass playing.
Please Note: I am not a 'qualified school teacher' and don't have a PGCE in teaching or anything like that.
What Kind Bass Pupils Am I Looking To Teach?
- Pupils who can have lessons on a Monday evening (it's the only night I teach).
- Pupils who are really keen to learn either double bass or electric bass.
- Pupils who are either beginners or bassists who want to improve move there.
- Pupils who want to and have the time to practice.
- Electric bass players (of any standard) who want help moving on to double bass.
- Electric bass players who only read tab and want to learn to read notation.
- Bass players who only play by ear and want to learn to read.
